Understanding The Types of HDMI Cables

Nowadays it is unlikely that the manufacturer of your TV, Blu-ray player, DVD player or recorder, games console, PC, digibox or Sky HD box will supply the appropriate HDMI cables with your product. This means that you cannot experience the crystal-clear pictures which your new technology offers until you have purchased either HDMI cables and/or a HDMI adapter. With just a quick browse of HDMI products it becomes obvious that this is not just a case of finding a HDMI cable and adding it to your online shopping basket.

You will uncover a world of HDMI cables of varying prices and qualities, featuring phrases such as HDMI to HDMI, cables with Ethernet connections, mount cables, long length leads, flat leads, high speed leads and standard speed leads. And thats before you even begin to understand what a HDMI wall plate, HDMI adapter, HDMI extender or HDMI splitter is. But what are all of these options, and what should you be looking for to connect your devices? If you are looking to connect two HD-ready devices - a games console to a HDTV for example - HDMI cables provide the interconnection you require. HDMI to HDMI (sometimes called M to M) cables are for connecting two HDMI-enabled devices (eg. your Playstation 3 to your HDTV). These are the most commonly required of all HDMI cables, and are available in a large number of lengths and qualities.

HDMI cables such as HDMI to HDMI connectors encounter loss of signal strength through the wires, so it is important to choose a high quality wire if you want the picture quality to be as high as possible. You should also match your HDMI to HDMI cable to the resolution of your TV or monitor as a minimum. You will see that your TV is given a resolution measurement, such as 480i, 720p, 1080i or 1080p. If you have a 720p TV for example, a HDMI to HDMI cable which suits from 480i to 1080p is definitely suitable, as would a cable with a minimum operating at a minimum of 720p to over 1080p. If you choose a cable which is not capable of carrying the resolution which you require, you will not be able to enjoy the full picture quality of which your device is capable.

1080p and beyond HDMI cables are available with Ethernet, which allows for an internet connection and a high quality picture. Also consider purchasing a cable which can carry a resolution higher than your device, should you choose to update your technology in the future. Gold wire fittings and high speed cables allow for a higher level of picture quality, and if you are choosing a longer length cable (available up to 30m), ensure you choose an active cable, which is a form of signal booster to combat loss in signal through the length of the wire.

You may need a HDMI adapter if one or both of your devices do not both have HDMI M port, for example, if your display device is a monitor with a DVI connector (these look bigger than HDMI ports). You can use a DVI to HDMI adapter to enable you to connect a HDMI cable into it.

The History of Wireless Networking

The history of wireless networks and of wireless networking goes hand in hand. Without the discovery of technology such as the radio, wireless technology would not exist at all today. The history of wireless networking goes as far back as the 1800's with that advent of radio waves. The advent of more technology grew throughout the years and expanded to what we communicated with today.

In 1888, a Hamburg, Germany born physicist named Heinrich Rudolf Herz produced his first radio wave ever. By 1894 this radio wave production became a way of communication. Telegraph wires were used to receive the radio waves in signal form. Herz opened the way for radio, television, and radar with his discovery of electromagnetic waves. An Italian inventor named Marchese Guglielmo Marconi then expanded the radius of radio wave sending to two miles, becoming the "father of the radio." By 1899, this form of telecommunication could travel pretty far for its time. Marconi could send a signal 9 miles across the Bristol Channel. He eventually expanded the radius to 31 miles across the English Channel to France. By 1901 the communication area became immense. Marconi could send signals across the entire Atlantic Ocean.

World War II became a big stepping stone for the radio wave. The United States was the first party to use radio waves for data transmission during the war. This use of radio waves could have quite possibly won the war for the Americans. The use of radio wave data communication lead to a lot of speculation to whether the radio signals could be expanded into something bigger than it currently was. In 1971, a group of researchers under the lead of Norman Abramson, at the University of Hawaii, created the first "packet-switched" radio communications network entitled "Alohanet." Alohanet was the first wireless local area network, otherwise known as a WLAN. The first WLAN was not much, but it was a large discovery. The Alohanet WLAN was comprised of seven computers that communicated to each other. In 1972, Alohanet connected with the WLAN system Arpanet on the mainland. This length of connect was ground breaking in telecommunications between computers.

The first types of WLAN technology used an interface in which became over crowded for communication. Small appliances and industrial machinery caused interference so the technology had to be updated. The second type of WLAN technology to be released ended up being four times faster than its predecessor at 2Mbps per second. We use the third format of WLAN today, though our current WLAN system runs at the same speed as the second system released.

In 1990, the 802.11 Working Group was established to work towards a WLAN standard for all computers to communicate from. In 1997, IEEE 802.11 was accepted as the standard data communication format for wireless local area networks. The technology continues to grow today. Governments and large corporations are constantly looking out for the latest and fastest standard to work from.

The expansion of wireless networking will likely continue for decades to come.

Best Home Theater Receiver: The AV Receiver

The surround sound receiver is an important piece of equipment that is more commonly referred to as the AV receiver. AV in this particular instance refers to audio and video. In other words, the receiver receives all this information and then plays traffic cop directing it where it should go. If you purchase an all in one sort of AV receiver you will notice that in addition to conducting traffic this particular tool wears many hats when it comes to effectively running your home theater or surround sound system.

The receiver functions in the capacity of a switch for all audio and visual information that comes into your home theater system. This device takes all the source information and data and literally switches (or translates if you will) that data into pictures and sound. Without something to operate in this capacity it would be impossible to have a home theater system as the information couldn't be properly filtered and translated into the areas to which it needs to go.

Surround decoding is yet another task that the AV receiver performs with grace. Surround sound is encoded onto the discs that we play in our theater or sound equipment. The most common type of encoding is designed for 5.1 channel surround sound systems such as Dolby Digital or DTS receivers. There are others that exist but the vast majority of DVDs are designed and encoded for the above mentioned 5.1 channel systems.

As if these weren't enough the AV receiver also works in the capacity of a signal processor. Common signals that are processed by the receiver are the following: THX post-processing, bass management, digital audio decoding, and simulated soundfields. If at all possible, you should really take the effort to find an AV receiver that is THX certified. The requirements to meet the minimal certification standards make a system that meets those standards an excellent investment for your home theater or surround sound needs.

Amplification is yet another of the many tasks performed regularly by your AV receiver. This is an important task to your surround sound and the overall 'theatrical' experience of viewing movies on your home theater. You will probably be wise to check with your retailer about how much amplification you actually need in your home theater, as there are many mitigating factors that affect that number such as ceiling height, square footage of the room, flooring material and other things as well. While more power is good in most situations there are times when it is simply too much for your system to handle. This is one reason that many people opt to buy ready-made box kits for their surround sound and home theater needs.

Last but certainly not least, the AV receiver actually works as a tuner for AM/FM radio. Don't be too shocked and awed by all the jobs that this one little device does, just remember this when you see the sticker price and think to yourself how much more you would pay if you were buying a separate device for each of these functions. We should all be grateful to the person who invented this particular contraption and be glad to pay the price we are paying for the amazing sound that is produced.

A Brief Overview Of The Laptop AC Adapter

The laptop AC adapter is one of the most crucial accessories that help you work on your laptop when you are on the move. There are laptop accessories like the coolant fans, surge protectors, screen protectors, security cables, and laptop adapter that enhance your working experience with the notebook. There are both AC and DC adapters in electronic gadgets and the laptop AC adapter works like a battery charger for the laptop.

The laptop AC adapter can be spotted everywhere. It is a key accessory for the gadget without which it cannot function properly. At times when you are working on your workplace laptop, you may find the power fluctuating. In times like these, you will need to plug in your notebook AC adapter to keep working smoothly while your battery gets charged. Without the laptop AC adapter, the machine will turn off and you will need to look for some other computer to continue working. This is again not practically feasible because you are not going to be able to access the files you had been working on in your original computer. When the files are not shared and information contained in them is confidential, you cannot access them from other machines. Also, without a notebook adapter you stand the risk of not being able to meet deadlines.

Yet, at times, the laptop adapter may not function just like any other electronic gadget that is capable of malfunction at any time. So, when carrying an adapter, you should ensure that it is working fine. If you frequently travel to faraway destinations, especially to the places where input voltage is likely to be lower than in your home country, you may need to get yourself another compatible adapter. You need to find out about the input voltage where you are visiting and make sure the laptop AC adapter you plan to carry will work there. Some adapters are capable of making such transitions easily and this is something you must inquire about when you buy a laptop. Along with the laptop adapter, you must ensure that the battery is in working condition. When this malfunctions, you may need to get a new battery.

Causes for the notebook adapter faltering may be many, for example, exposure to frequent temperature changes, wire bending, and age. The lifespan of a laptop adapter depends on its usage. When the laptop AC adapter appears to be giving trouble, it is best to check for any loose connections to start with. The notebook adapter typically displays a green-colored LED light that glows whenever the adapter powers the laptop. When this light is off, it means that the laptop is not getting any power.

Next, you need to check all the electrical outlets to see if the power socket is in good condition. Changing the sockets is a solution. Sometimes when a cable is bent, the laptop AC adapter may malfunction. You should ensure that there is no weight on the cable that sends power. Along with this, you must check the cable itself for any damages. In this way, a reliable laptop AC adapter can go a long way in ensuring your work gets finished on time and you have the peace of mind to perform better.
